Positest Paint MeterWhy buy a paint thickness meter?

Missing "paintwork" on just one car can easily be a mistake greater than the cost of a meter. Truly. If you have bought many cars, you know what I say is true. Especially if you buy highline cars. If you buy sleds, then you don't need this. I do recommend using a paint meter on cars over $5000. Its cheap insurance!

Basically, you will be getting a second set of eyes looking at the car for paintwork. How many times have you looked at a car and wanted a second opinion? Now you can!

Sure, you can still look for tape lines, fish eyes, sand lines, & mismatched panels  but a paint gauge makes the job a whole LOT faster! Time is precious at an auto auction - you know that. With a paint meter, you can look at more cars, more quickly, more accurately!

Cars can look different at different angles in different light. A meter could care less about lighting - it just measures the thickness of the paint. Have you ever wished you had X-ray vision? That's basically what a paint gauge is!

Paint thickness measurement is a powerful tool for finding evidence of accidents, patching of rust spots, and past paint repairs. Unlike visual inspections, a paint meter is a reliable, quantifiable, & accurate measurement tool. If a vehicle that has been repainted, it can have a reduce it's ACV (Actual Cash Value). The newer the car and more highline the car, the more it effects price!

Additionally, many buyers, used car managers, sales managers, auto brokers, & wholesalers could not find paintwork if it was dripping on their foot. If this is you, get a meter!

Why is paintwork so critical? In 99% of the cases, if there is NO evidence of paintwork, the car has NOT been in any accident. What a piece of mind.

Plus, if you auto broker a lot of cars, like me, you will just love showing your customers thePositest Paint Meter readings off of each panel. How many other dealers will do that? It adds so much credibility. On my next video, for any car I sell on eBay, I am going to start showing the readings on each panel on the video!

Another tip: If you are going to buy one, get a 3% meter NOT a 5%. The two meters I recommend, the PosiTest DFT Combo and the Elcometer 311 Highline are 3% meter. Meters like a Quanix "Handy" or the one from Pro Motor Car Products are 5% meters. Quanix does make a 4500 model that is a 3% meter but if anything goes wrong with them, you have to mail it back to Germany to have it repaired & you pay the freight both ways. So, this one reason why I don't recommend Quanix.

Warning: Before long, the market will be flooded with cheap Chinese models as well. Stay clear of them! Trust me, with fine measurement instruments, you get what you pay for. You want a meter as accurate as possible. After all, what you are looking for is the difference in the readings from panel to panel AND if the cheap meter you buy has a LARGE range of tolerance, you will not know what the true reading is. Like my dad told me, "If you buy cheap, you'll buy twice!"

How to Use the Meter: Make sure you watch the video. Paint should read 3.5 - 6 mils (1mil = 1/1000th of an inch). If you get a reading of 12 on a panel, this is a cause of concern & further investigation.

Last Tip: Get a meter that reads BOTH Aluminum and Steel! More and more panels on cars are becoming aluminum. Yes, they cost more but, like my dad always told me, "If you buy cheap, you will buy twice!"

The president of Elcometer once said, "It's a whole new way of thinking in the used-car business. A lot of guys tell us, 'I've been buying cars for 20 years, and I don't need one.' But they try it out and never look back."
